Building a Restoration Economy
Environmental Restoration = Economic Restoration
Investing in coastal restoration in the Mississippi River Delta and Gulf Coast provides quadruple returns, by supporting jobs in multiple sectors:
- Tourism and fishing jobs
- Infrastructure-related jobs in oil and gas, ports and other transportation areas
- Jobs in firms engaged in restoration work
- Creation of a new export industry in restoration — a growing global market
The RESTORE Act (S. 1400) will enable the Clean Water Act penalties from the 2010 BP oil disaster to kick start the launch of a long-term investment in coastal ecosystem restoration.
Without action from Congress, those fines could have gone to unrelated federal spending, instead of repairing the area damaged by the spill.
A healthy coastal ecosystem is vital for the gulf’s economy and has the potential to create jobs for businesses across the United States.
